SoFi Unveils Blockchain-Based Remittance Service: Real-Time Crypto Payments Across Borders

After a two-year pause, fintech giant SoFi re-enters crypto with blockchain remittance via its app—starting in Mexico and expanding globally.

SoFi, the U.S.-based fintech firm, has relaunched its crypto capabilities with a new blockchain-powered remittance service, signaling its renewed commitment to digital assets. The update comes after SoFi exited the crypto space in 2023 to pursue a national banking charter but resumed its crypto initiatives in June 2025.

The remittance feature, developed in collaboration with Lightspark, enables users to send money internationally directly through the SoFi app. The process operates seamlessly: USD is converted into Bitcoin, transferred via blockchain, then instantly converted into the recipient’s local currency. The service has officially launched in Mexico, with plans to roll out to additional countries in phases.

Why It Matters

  1. Real-world Use Case – SoFi provides crypto functionality beyond speculation—offering practical solutions for remittances and cross-border payments, areas where blockchain has clear advantages.

  2. Trust Re-built – After pausing crypto services to align with stringent banking regulations, SoFi is re-entering the crypto ecosystem with a compliant, consumer-centric model.

  3. Integrated Efficiency – Offering faster, cost-effective transfers, this move positions SoFi as a convergence point between traditional finance and blockchain innovation.

CEO Anthony Noto emphasized the strategic significance of this relaunch, stating:

“We’re excited to once again offer users access to crypto—but with speed, security, and cost-efficiency. Our blockchain-backed remittance service represents the future of digital money movement.”

Noto also hinted at broader ambitions: future expansions could include crypto trading, USD-pegged stablecoins, staking, and borrowing against digital assets—all integrated into the SoFi ecosystem.

This development is timely. After years of exploring crypto, SoFi now matches industry momentum: the GENIUS Act has established federal stablecoin regulations, while other major players—from Circle to fintech firms—continue embracing digital asset applications. SoFi’s re-engagement demonstrates how mainstream institutions are embedding crypto into everyday financial services.
